Van Allen Probe B Electric Fields and Waves (EFW) Spin-fit Electric field in modified-GSE (MGSE) coord, density, and other products

ResourceID
spase://VSPO/NumericalData/RBSP/B/EFW/L3/PT11S

Description

This data set contains Level 3 wave electric field and search coil wave magnetic fields data from the Electric Field and Waves Suite (EFW) onboard Van Allen Probe A. The spin-fit electric field (spin period resolution) tends to be the most accurate electric field measurement. However, as always, due diligence by the user/scientists must be exercised in using these data. The spin-fit electric field is provided in both an inertial and co-rotating frame. The electric field is presented in a MGSE (modified GSE) coordinate system. We provide two components (Y MGSE and Z MGSE) of the electric field. Both components are in the spin plane of the spacecraft and are measured with the long 50 m booms. The X MGSE component is along the spin-axis. The spin-axis of the spacecraft is oriented within 37 degrees of the Earth sun line. So the Y GSE direction is most nearly aligned with the Y MGSE axis and the Z MGSE direction is most nearly aligned with Z GSE.

Density estimation from sc potential

density
Description

Density estimation from sc potential, determined from the form density = A1exp(bx)+A2exp(cx), where x=(V1 + V2)/2, where the constants are found by comparison to upper hybrid line from EMFISIS. The fit is updated approximately monthly. For a more accurate density (or verification) for a specific time period contact the EFW team. Values below 10cm-3 and above 3000 cm-3 are untrustworthy and are removed

EFW Data Quality Flags
ParameterKey
flags_all
Description

The quality of EFW data products can be affected by a variety of observatory and instrument-level conditions. efw_qual is a collection of flags that show the estimate of each of these contributors over time. ..See the EFW-FAQ (http://www.space.umn.edu/rbspefw-data-policy-the-rules-of-the-road/) for a detailed description of the determination and meaning of each of the elements of efw_qual...If the value of a particular element of efw_qual is not relevant to the quality of a particular data product, it shall receive the value -2...If the value of a particular element of efw_qual is relevant to the quality of a particular data product but is not known at the time lf L2 data production, it shall receive the value -1...A quality value of 0 indicates that there are no known issues with the data product due to that particular element of efw_qual...The quality values are meant to be conservative, and values other than 0 should lead the user back to a member of the EFW instrument team for discussion and advice on the nature of the data quality as needed.
